Biogeochemical Cycling – An Introduction. In: Treatise on Estuarine and Coastal Science (Second Edition)

Abstract

The section on "Biogeochemical Cycling" provides an updated comprehensive overview on the transport and transformation processes and fluxes of energy, matter and life in estuaries and the coastal zone. The more population and resource use in the coastal zone grow in the Anthropocene, the more are coastal element cycles, ecology and ecosystem service supply affected and come into focus. In order to achieve the United Nation׳s sustainable development goals and in particular a sustainable development and use of estuaries and coastal zones it is mandatory to understand and quantify the biogeochemical processes and fluxes. This section of the Treatise covers many relevant aspects in this context, including climate-active gases, submarine groundwater discharge, carbon and nutrient cycling, physical aspects of particle production, vegetated coastal ecosystems ("Blue Carbon"), the role of sediments and the biogeochemical coupling of element cycles.
