Mangrove ecosystems provide manifold ecosystem services of ecological and societal relevance for local communities and human populations worldwide. Such complex social-ecological systems call for more interdisciplinary research, the more since they are facing various threats, often human-induced. Based on a bibliographic review (using the Web of Science bibliographic database) of mangrove-related publications, we provide an assessment of the level of interdisciplinarity in mangrove research. We focuse on literature related to livelihood and other ecosystem services, to general, global or human threats, and to sustainability and consilience. To provide a first overview on how far social and ecological data had been integratively examined and discussed in the light of local and global threats to mangrove ecosystems in mangrove research, we evaluated topical overlap among these categories and conducted a citation network analysis. Our results show that interlinked investigations of social and ecological spheres in mangrove research just emerged relatively recently (between 2010 and 2011), and publications combining several dimensions have received so far little echo in the mangrove scientific community. Our dataset is dominated by publications related to threats to mangrove ecosystems (with notably 3265 publications related to human threats), and only few publications focus on livelihood (192), consilience (344), sustainability (538) or ecosystem services (540). Owing to the strong dependence of some local human populations on resources provided by mangrove ecosystems, and to the ecological and societal relevance of mangrove ecosystems at both the local and global scale, we stress the necessity for more interdisciplinary research to address upcoming challenges and elaborate adaptive measures to support local communities and preserve mangrove ecosystems.
