Abstract

Microorganisms are involved in many processes that support mangrove ecosystem functioning and many of the ecosystem services mangroves provide. Nonetheless, due to the immense diversity of microorganisms and the multitude of biotic interactions they are involved in, it remains a challenge to decipher the keystone species and key drivers of ecosystem processes, notably when it comes to element cycling in the sediments. After a brief introduction about the diverse taxonomic groups microbial communities are composed of, and their drivers (considering both abiotic and biotic factors), we provide a concise overview of the distinct element cycling processes they are involved in. A review of the present knowledge about microbial communities in mangrove ecosystems is provided based on a bibliographic search performed on the Web of Science database, focusing on sediment or plant-associated microbial communities (1351 publications). A thorough description of available approaches used in microbial ecology, highlighting their respective scope and limitations to further our knowledge of microbial diversity, activity, and the processes they support, is provided, with examples taken from mangrove research. We finally identify research gaps and propose future research avenues to foster mangrove microbiome research, in order to foster our understanding of the relevance of microorganisms for mangrove ecosystems. Principally, we advocate integrative research, using methodological approaches that allow for multi-taxon simultaneous detection (such as metagenomics) and diligent recording of contextual data, following standardized procedures.
