Abstract

In their recent review entitled “The status of coral reef ecology research in the Red Sea,” Berumen et al. (2013) hereafter “the authors” rightly call for an expansion of research into coral reefs of the Red Sea. We appreciate this initiative and acknowledge the substantial effort the authors have invested in order to provide readers of coral reefs with a summary on existing literature and resulting gaps of knowledge that should be addressed through research. However, for similarly informative reasons, we feel obliged to note a number of research areas not considered in the review. Firstly, as noted by the authors, their review was not meant to cover all aspects of coral reef research in the Red Sea, but it is important to indicate those areas that have not been included given the broad title chosen by the authors. Second, by integrating their topic selection and methodological reliance on Web of Knowledge (WoK), the authors generate a narrowly focused view of the much broader range of research on coral reef ecology. One effect of those choices is the omission of the considerable number of seminal studies of coral reef ecology carried out in the Gulf of Aqaba/Eilat (GoA/E) over the past decades. Our goal in this brief comment is to identify research areas and papers that also should be considered in an inclusive review of coral reef ecology research in the Red Sea.
