In recent years, a major change has occured in the way projects which focus on the health of ecosystems and of the societies linked to them are conceived. On the natural science side, there is a shift from aiming at the conservation of single species and their habitats toward conservation and management of the interactive networks of species and large-scale ecosystems on which species depend. On the social science side, there are moves away from the classic cost-benefit analyses towards the integration of institutional and equity as planning objectives. The primary objective of the German-Brazilian co-operation project MADAM is to develop the scientific foundations for the sustainable stewardship of the resources of the Caeté mangrove estuary in Northeast Brazil. To achieve this, suitable models shall be developed to analyse causal linkages within the ecosystem, to forecast the effects of acute or chronic interference on utilised resources, and to answer wider, management-related questions (i.e. resoration of destroyed aread, utilisation potential for aquqculture, inter alia). This article describes the scientific principles pursued by the project in order to achieve its aims and discusses these in the context of research results from initial two-year project phase.
