Between 1990 and 1994 the German Science Council (Wissenschaftsrat) reviewed all sectors of governmentally funded environmental research in Germany. The report describes the present state in the various fields of environmental research, such as atmospheric and aquatic sciences, ecosystem studies, medicine, public health, engineering and humanities. Disciplinary research is more developed than interdisciplinary approaches are, particularly those bridging natural sciences, engineering, and social sciences, aiming at the solution of complex environmental issues. Most of the environmental research is carried out outside the universities and is widely scattered over a great number of institutes of different affiliation. Recommendations are given for further development of environmental research at the universities and to improve links between them and non-university institutions.
