Abstract

Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) is a significant source of nutrients and solutes to the sea, but its presence in the southwest coast of India is not well understood. This study conducted comprehensive onshore/offshore sampling and monitoring to investigate SGD in the region. By analyzing groundwater levels, sea surface temperature, physicochemical characteristics of coastal groundwater, porewater and seawater, as well as radon measurements, potential SGD areas were identified. Using a water balance approach, submarine groundwater discharge and nutrient fluxes of dissolved inorganic nitrogen, phosphate and silicate were estimated for Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode regions. The results indicate higher nutrient fluxes in the Kozhikode area due to favourable geology and land use practices. Further research using radium isotope analysis and seepage metre deployment will contribute to a better understanding of SGD dynamics and nutrient transport along the southwest coast of India.
